Illustration Friday: Choose

"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice." -Rush

This is about being stuck in an uncomfortable comfort zone. Inspired by Anonyrrie's "Venturing Beyond". Do you think to dream of greatness is a form of greed, or a desire to fill an insecure need, or a sign that you have the ability to succeed?

  3. Thank you for the mention! I love the mystical power of this piece. I think dreaming of greatness has many meanings, and it really depends on what kind of greatness one seeks and what motivation lies beneath. It is good to want to be your personal best - to me, that's greatness!

  4. WISE WORDS from Carla!

All of the above and more!

Beautiful mystical piece, very powerful and resonant.

I think life is complex and filled with ambiguities and that there are many facets to our longings.

But being your personal best is a great goal to strive for!

    How do you define greatness?

  5. Thanks everyone! I agree. We should all be striving for our personal best, but if we feel we may have reached it in a certain area, and yet want more, we may be limiting ourselves to one of those uncomfortable comfort zones, or as Carla mentioned, we may have the wrong motivations.

I'm still working on that definition, Mary. Mainly, I'm trying to get out of this comfort zone, and I'm not sure where I want to go.

  6. I don't think wanting more is greedy unless it's at someone elses expense. If people long for more material things, hopefully they'll eventually realize that happiness doesn't come from having more "stuff." But if you want more out of life in general, than ask, but be grateful for your life and everything in it at every moment. At least that's what I try to remind myself to do. Does that make sense? Beautiful photo collage and great question!

  7. It makes perfect sense, Studio Lolo. Thankyou everybody for the wonderful advise and words of encouragement. Ya'll given me something to think about, like "what is my personal best?", "am I limiting myself?", and "who does it hurt to try?".

  9. Thanks Mary! I've been doing a lot of thinking, and this is what I've come up with so far [I'm still doing some research on it, though]. I dream of traveling, and have found an opportunity in the middle east with great pay, benefits, and vacation time to travel anywhere else I want to go, but it's dangerous and I'm not crazy about supporting a war. It would however, utilize my skills of helping people and organization [regarding a goal of personal best]. On the other hand, I have an opportunity to go back to school, which would be more practical, sensible, and safe. I would have to stay in this uncomfortable comfort zone for a few more years to do this, and I haven't found a field of study that is attainable for me, and that would help me reach my dream of traveling.

Right now I'm leaning toward the second option, and thinking about studying Naturopathy, which would be helping me towards a goal of personal best in helping people. There are a lot of deeper issues as to why I feel so trapped here, which goes toward the motivation of my dream, and the reason why I question my motivations [indeed Mary, "there are many facets to our longings"]. I've felt trapped all my life, and have always dreamed of traveling. I'll need to deal with these issues if I'm to ever be sucessful in school.
