Tennessee Trip 2011

The Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee as seen from my friends' house. I went to visit for a week of hiking and relaxation. It was great to get away from the Texas heat and drought. The fall color was at it's peak.

We had a picnic dinner one night on a hill just up from their house. We ate Amish cheese with wine, and watched a front roll in.

The next morning, I awoke to this view outside my window. It's been months since I've seen it rain like this.

When the sun finally came out again, I went hiking around their property. They own about 100 acres in these mountains.

The hike was photographically inspiring. I've posted more pics here at Silk Creek Portal.

  1. Yea! You posted

I never thought of Tennessee as having fall colours - guess I was wrong

the second pic of the clouds is - well I don’t like the word - but perhaps is best one to describe it - awesome just incredible

the one of the branch with the rain drops is perfect

if I took the one of the plant in the sun - the leaves in the sun would show up white. I’ve been told how to correct for this with ISO and white balance but I can’t seem to get it

yes they are inspiring pics - I love the juxtiposition of the plant and tree trunk

ah - you did what I still have trouble doing - getting a blurred back ground and clear foreground

  2. Wow, that was fast! You must have commented right after I posted it. Did you see the link to my other blog, Silk Creek Portal? I added it later.

Thanks for all your encouraging words. On the flowers, I under exposed the pic, because the sun was so bright, so the background looks a little darker than it really was. The flowers were growing out of the side of a steep grade, so I climbed up behind them and found a branch of them in the sunlight with a clearing on the other side of them. Then I used the macro setting. That's how I got the blurred background.

I used the macro setting along with a zoom on the branch with the water droplets, also, to get the blurred background. It was difficult to get the foreground in focus, though, because I was shooting through a window. It took several shots to get that one.
